Diary: November 2002

David Ganiford was our November speaker. He is a member of the support team that accompanies the Antarctic Survey scientist. His excellent slides helped us to feel the intense cold of the winter there, the three months of darkness when the sun stays below the horizon, and the incredible beauty of the Antarctic scenery and its animals.

We heard about and saw the wide range of support work covered by the team. Each is an expert in his field, - mechanic, cook, doctor, tradesman, engineer etc., Êyet they all work together as well - off-loading a container ship cargo, digging out a snowplough, clearing the runway.

David obviously enjoys his tours on the other side of the world as a stark change from the hustle and bustle of life here.

The Harvest Supper was very well supported. The hall looked appropriately autumnal, the food was the usual W.I. best and the entertainers (The 2 of 'Em) soon had us singing in the aisles!
