Girton Show 14th July 2007
See what Girton has done!
This was the 23rd presentation of the show and proved to be a record one! The talents and skills of residents, members of the Garden Society, Girton WI and children up to the age of 16 years who entered, were revealed.
Calculations completed, Girton Glebe School Hall became a hive of activity. Tables covered in white were in situ, each class labelled and separated with ribbons, allocating requisite space according to number of entries.
Saturday dawned and excitement rose as entrants covered the spaces with their exhibits. The hall was transformed with a wonderful array of flowers, fruit, vegetables, home baking, preserves, art work, crafts and photographs displayed for all to see. When all was hushed in readiness for 'inspection' I was once again amazed and thought 'Girton, you are the tops! Children came up trumps with their colourful and imaginative exhibits, more than ever this year. Their judge, Neroli Sharpe, was warm with her praise declaring every child was a winner
Indeed every judge was impressed by the high standard achieved throughout the show. All comments are intended to encourage future entries and perhaps, inspire onlookers to try their hand - next year!
We are indebted to so many who helped, indeed too many to mention by name, but two helpers, Douglas de Lacey and Sam Clift who collected tables before and after the event do deserve a special mention. The 'muscle men' who manhandle these tables and everyone who helped in any capacity earned our sincere gratitude. Thanks to our two community centres St Vincent's Close, Orchard Close and to Councillor Bullman for loan of tables also Girton Glebe School for use of premises.
Special thanks are reserved for our 'Mastermind' Chairman, Peter Seaber and his family to whom our gratitude knows no bounds.
Headmaster of Girton Glebe School, Philip Atkin, too deserves our thanks for his enthusiastic support and being 'Presenter' of the awards.
Who then remains to be thanked? You, the entrants without whom there would be no show. Sincere thanks to one and all. To everyone who came along in the afternoon to look, wonder and enjoy a cup of tea and piece of cake cheerfully served by Yvonne Belcham (who did all the baking) Eileen Drew, Pam Hodson and their helpers.
I am sure everyone agrees this was a spectacular show enjoyed by all. Heart-felt thanks and congratulations to everyone.
