
State Funeral
Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on Monday September 19 at 11am. This date has been approved by King Charles III as a Bank Holiday.
William Collyn Community Centre will be open from 10am to 1pm on Monday 19th September for people to come together to watch the funeral. Open door, no charge, Complimentary Tea and Coffee will be available.
St Andrew’s Church – Girton
The Church opening hours will be extended to 9am to 7pm for those who wish to pray or meditate there.
Condolence Books
A Condolence Book is now available in St Andrew’s Church for your messages and memories of Queen Elizabeth II.
A Condolence Book will also be available in all Cambridgeshire Libraries including Histon & Impington Library.
Online Condolence Books are available from South Cambridgeshire District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and the Royal Family website.
Floral Tributes
Floral tributes can be placed just outside the Church. Flowers must be unwrapped from cellophane.
Flowers will be removed the day after the funeral and then disposed of appropriately.
Light a Candle
There will also be a table for those of you who would like to light a candle in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.
Change to Bin Collections
Bin collections for residents of South Cambridgeshire will take place one day later than usual next week. This is to reflect the fact that the State Funeral following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will take place on Monday 19 September – which will be a Bank Holiday. The collection scheduled for Friday 23 September will take place on Saturday 24 September. Bin collections will return to their normal schedule on Monday 26 September.

Girton Church, lights to be in purple
From the evening of 10th September to the day of the Queen’s funeral, St Andrew’s Church Girton will be highlighted in purple in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.

National Moment of Reflection – September 18th September
On Sunday 18th September you are invited to gather at Girton’s war memorial at 8pm for a moment of silent reflection on the eve of the Funeral of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and for the proclamation of King Charles III.
The public have been invited to take part in a National Moment of Reflection to mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflect on her life and legacy. The National Moment of Reflection will take place at 8pm on Sunday (18 September), the night before the State Funeral, and be marked by a one-minute silence. The silence can be marked privately at home, with friends and family, out on doorsteps or the street with neighbours, or at locally arranged community events and vigils. Community groups, clubs and other organisations across the country are encouraged to take part and people overseas are also encouraged to observe the one-minute silence at 8pm local time. Girton Parish Council Meeting cancelled – Wednesday 14th September
On the advice of National Association and Local Council (NALC) and Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC), Girton Parish Council Full Council meeting scheduled for 14th September was cancelled by GPC Clerk. Our apologies to all residents who wished to attend or had an interest on an item in the agenda. This meeting will be re-scheduled as soon as possible,
Church Service at St Andrew’s – Sunday 11th September
Instead of evensong, there will be a special service to mark the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II. All are welcome.

Girton Church Bells – Friday 9th September
At noon on Friday 9th September the Bells at St Andrew’s Church were rung 96 times, once for every year of the Queen’s life.
