Groundsman Compound Version 7
Girton Parish Council has recently extended its maintenance responsibilities to cover the entire village through the recruitment of a Parish Ranger, enhancing its capacity to care for public spaces and infrastructure. The proposed compound, located adjacent to the tennis courts on the site of the disused cricket nets, is designed to serve as a central Operational Hub. It will provide secure, dedicated facilities for the Groundskeeper and Parish Ranger, supporting all Recreation Ground users and enabling the safe relocation of equipment and materials currently stored in the pavilion. This relocation is essential for meeting Health & Safety standards and will allow the pavilion to be repurposed for its intended use—supporting changing facilities and indoor community activities rather than storage.

The compound consolidates all storage into one efficient location, preserving open views, avoiding tree removal, and causing minimal disturbance to existing hedgerows. It also removes dependency on the muddy access road, improving operational access and reducing vehicle impact.

Dedicated storage units will be provided for Girton Musical Theatre (GMT) and Girton Feast, two key community organisations whose events have contribute significantly to local resilience and social cohesion over many years. Formal agreements will be established to support their use of the space.

This development reflects a broader vision of a community hub, with inclusive initiatives such as a Men’s Shed under consideration, and plans to incorporate Biodiversity Net Gains. The compound is a long-overdue improvement that supports both current and future community needs.  Our plans have been carefully considered taking into account advice from experts in Biodiversity Net Gain to allow us to deliver in a way that is sensitive to the landscape by implementing a layout that allows us to fully retain and maintain the hedge adjacent to the compound.  This approach is aligned with Girton Parish Council’s commitment to sustainable, community-led infrastructure.
